Africa Online Assists in Rehabilitating Of Noigam Primary School

On Friday 25th September 2009, Africa Online in partnership with Telkom South Africa officially handed over Noigam Primary School in Kitale, Kenya to the local community. The ceremony commemorated the opening of the school's rehabilitated classrooms, fencing of the school's compound and donation of new desks.

Speaking about the initiative at the function, Africa Online's acting CEO Shiletsi Makhofane said, "We are here to officially handover the school to the local community. We are glad that we as Africa Online have been able to positively touch another life and ensure that these children are able to continue with their education in a decent environment enabling them to realize their future goals."

He added that Africa Online was committed to creating partnerships with the communities where the company operates. "Our goal is to match the needs of the community with specific interventions that will leave a lasting impact." He said.

Mr. Makhofane said the assistance was a gift to the school for accommodating those affected by the 2007 post election violence. "We decided to rehabilitate the school infrastructure to reciprocate your hospitality to IDPs." said the Ag. CEO.

Noigam Primary school hosted over 40,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the post election violence that erupted in early 2008.

Like many other schools affected by the post election violence, the students of Noigam primary had been learning in temporary mud walled classrooms that were no longer fit for use. It was against this background that Africa Online Holdings stepped in and donated a total of over one million Kenya Shillings to the Catholic Diocese of Kitale to assist in the re-building of the school.

Also present at the ceremony was Ken Munyi, AfOL Kenya General Manager Ken Munyi and AfOL Kenya's Board of Director Ambassador Mwenyengela Ngali.
